Students at the Amrita School of Engineering in Bengaluru have been busy. As part of one or more forums, they have had the opportunity to participate in several activities this year.
“We encouraged all departments to start clubs and forums that could provide the right platform for learning activities by students,” stated Dr. Rakesh, Associate Dean of the School.
The ECI (Electronics, Communication and Instrumentation) Forum was one of the first to be inaugurated, on January 27, 2010.
The forum was open for membership to all students of Electronics & Communication and Electronics & Instrumentation branches.
“The aim of the forum is to provide an extra dimension to the academic growth of the student community by organizing invited talks, workshops and industrial visits,” stated Ms. Kirti S. Pande of the ECE department.
One of the first talks organized was that of Mr. V. V. R. Sastry, Retd. Chairman and MD, Bharat Electronics Ltd., who was present at the inaugural event. In his address on R&D in Industry, Dr. Sastry encouraged students to consider a career of research.
The month of February saw the inauguration of INGENIUM, the student forum of the Department of Mechanical Engineering as well as VIDHYUTH, of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Also launched in February was the Science and Humanities Forum, AAVISHKARA. Dr . S. Ranganathan, Honorary Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, was on campus to inaugurate this forum.
March saw the launch of FACE (Forum for Aspiring Computer Engineers) by students the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Have the forums helped increase student participation and exposure to events that contribute to their overall learning?
“Definitely,” stated Dr. Rakesh. “For example, consider the activities of INGENIUM. The students have already organized three invited talks. They have even brought out the first edition of their own magazine.”
