Born out of Amma’s vision to make sustainable development a reality by touching everyone including those at the bottom of the pyramid, Amrita School for Sustainable Development (AST) strives to impart education that revolves around experience that is based on evidence. The student and research community at AST is encouraged to design and develop holistic and comprehensive solutions that are sustainable in its truest sense. In order to bring in this transformation through education that imparts the necessary skills and knowledge to transform lives and reimagine a better world for everyone, touching even the most vulnerable communities forms the foundation of the programs at AST.
Distinctive Features:
With a unique framework to make sustainability a reality for people in need, the program is integrated with a comprehensive yet flexible curriculum called the “Experiential Learning Curriculum”. A fully funded PhD program, this offers opportunities for a double/joint PhD in affiliation with international universities, engagement programs with industry. Students are also provided an option to work with projects funded by global organizations.
Amrita’s Live-in-Lab® program is a multidisciplinary theory–into–practice initiative that facilitates the research, development, and deployment of sustainable solutions for current challenges faced by rural communities (villages) in India. Through experiential learning opportunities, participants from multiple disciplines can study, observe, and interact with villagers, while living in rural communities, to gain a better understanding of challenges in various thematic areas in alignment with the UN SDGs.
Training, capacity development and upskilling is conducted as a part of the experiential learning program for all the participants. As a part of this, various events such as symposiums, colloquiums and workshops are conducted.

PhD student led workshops across campuses
The PhD students from Amrita School for Sustainable Futures are actively involved in conducting workshops across multiple campuses. These sessions, designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students, serve as a platform for knowledge transfer and practical skill development. The PhD students play a pivotal role in imparting their specialized knowledge, fostering a culture of peer-to-peer learning and collaboration. The workshops encompass a range of topics, including practical training in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques.
Amrita Village Health Champions Training
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Amrita Hospitals in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), SEED Division, Govt. of India and UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation & Development, conducted a Amrita Village Health Champions ToT (Training of Trainers) program from 16 September to 25 September 2023. The objective of this program was to train healthcare volunteers from villages across India to become community health champions.
