Faculty members and postgraduate trainees from the Amrita School of Dentistry won best paper awards for their scientific presentations at 44th Kerala State Dental Conference in Trivandrum, during January 6-8, 2012.
Dr. Priya, Dr. Anju Mohan and Dr. Vijaysree from the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics received these honors as also Dr. Nithin Anand from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
In addition, several postgraduate trainees from the Department of Prosthodontics were similarly honoured.
“Diastema or spacing between teeth is a common aesthetic problem that the dentist has to deal with,” explained Dr. Priya who won the award for her paper titled Close Up! Management of Midline Diastema. The paper discussed factors to be considered, based on actual patient cases at Amrita.
“The management of midline diastema often needs to be multi-disciplinary. Unfortunately, a vast majority of these cases are mis-managed, due to improper treatment planning and lack of attention to etiology and clinical examination. We have had many patients who came to us with poor/failed treatment, and were re-treated for acceptable aesthetics and function,” she added.
Dr. Anju Mohan’s award-winning paper titled Half Way to Save Tooth-Hemisection described two clinical cases of severe gingival recession with pocketing in the distal root of mandibular molars.
“On radiographic examination, severe angular bone loss was seen in relation to the distal root, normal bone contour and support seen in the mesial root. A step-by-step treatment was planned, beginning with endodontic treatment followed by hemisection and rehabilitation,” explained Dr. Anju.
Dr. Vijaysree’s paper titled Surgical vs. Non- Surgical Management of Periapical Lesions presented two cases with periapical lesion that were treated non-surgically.
Finally, Dr. Nithin Anand from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, won an award for his paper titled Schwannoma Hard Palate – Pediatric Case Report.
“Schwannomas are rare benign neoplasms that originate from schwann cells of the peripheral nerve. They are usually asymptomatic. They do not recur and malignant transformation is rare,” explained Dr. Nithin.
Dr. Nitin presented the case report of palatal swelling in an eight year old girl that turned out to be a schwannoma.
