The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Coimbatore campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized a workshop titled Advances in Signal and Image Processing during May 30 – June 2, 2012.
“The field of Digital Signal and Image Processing is attracting millions of dollars in research all over the world, both in academia as well as industry. We believe that the technologies developed will help redefine the very field of science and engineering in the future,” stated workshop organizers, Dr. S. Veni, Dr. E. P. Sumesh and Mr. J. Aravinth.
That the field has the potential to create an enormous impact is not debated. Advancements in ways to generate, transform and interpret images and information, have helped pioneer may new developments in the fields of Communication, Medical Image Processing, Remote Sensing, Satellite Image Processing, Face Detection Techniques and Speech Recognition.
The four-day workshop at Amrita saw participation from a multidisciplinary group of delegates that included students, teachers and research scholars. Delegates represented the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Thiruvanathapuram; General Motors Research and Development Centre, Bangalore; engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as those located in Coimbatore itself.
Inaugurating the workshop, Dr. R. Krishnan, Head, Engineering Research, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapetham, shared his knowledge and insights from two decades of experience at the Advanced Data Processing Research Institute (ADRIN), Department of Space Sciences, Government of India.
Dr. Krishnan, who has just joined Amrita, spoke on Issues in High Resolution Image Analysis, elaborating on the different techniques of satellite image processing.
“Hough Transform is a technique with the help of which, features of images of particular shapes can be isolated. Gaussian Filters are used for smoothening satellite images,” he explained.
Dr. P. Murali Krishna, Scientist, Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) addressed delegates from his office in Kochi over an e-learning platform.
His talk titled Digital Radio Frequency Front-End elaborated on the technology that is used to process signals in wireless broadband, radar, sonar and broadcasting systems.
Lectures by Dr. T. R. Padmanabhan, Emeritus Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Dr. K. A. Narayanankutty, Professor and Head, Learning and Development, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham enlightened participants about the application of mathematics to the field of Signal and Image Processing.
Besides these lectures, there were talks delivered by Dr. C. Santhosh Kumar, Dr. S. Veni, Dr. J. Ravichandran, Dr. E. P. Sumesh and Prof. R. Ramanathan, all of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
Dr. K. P. Soman and Dr. K. I. Ramachandran of the Centre for Computational Engineering and Networking and Ms. Anjana of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, all from the same campus, also spoke.
Hands-on training and lab sessions supplemented the lectures.
“Practical experience is what we were looking for. The workshop provided us with many hands-on lab sessions that were really useful,” shared Devika N., MTech student at Sri Eswar College of Engineering, Coimbatore, who attended.
Aswin Tilak, MTech student from the same college summed up, “The workshop provided us a better understanding of the new concepts in Signal and Image Processing.”
