Indo-US Workshop at Kochi Campus

“Right from the very beginning, Chancellor Amma has placed a lot of emphasis on research and collaborations in our institution,” said Dr. Venkat Rangan, in his inaugural speech at the workshop on System Architectures, Human Usability and Security/Privacy for Streaming Data organized at Amrita’s Kochi campus on August 17, 2012.

The workshop was sponsored by the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum of the Government of India.

“There are over 3 million records here in our hospital, the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. We have built our own picture archival and communication system, PACS. Over 23 terra bytes of data resides here at the hospital. So big data is a topic that is extremely important to us and we couldn’t find a more appropriate place to host this workshop than here,” explained Dr. Krishnashree Achuthan, workshop convenor.

Dr. Vijay Bhatkar, architect of India’s first supercomputer; Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director, AIMS and Dr. Shantikumar Nair, Dean-Research of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, also spoke.

Dr. Kaladhara Voruganti, Technical Director, NetApp’s Advanced Technology Group from Sunnyvale, California, who played a key role in organizing the workshop, explained its objectives and desired outcomes.

“Every small gadget, your refrigerator, your car, everything will be generating data, because a small computer will be embedded in it, in the future. We won’t have data generated only by people sitting in front of computers, or from some batch programs running on a mainframe. That’s the new world that we are talking about,” he outlined.

“Today most data relationships are structured in nature. We have relational tables and a schema. Going forward, data will be unstructured. Even today, we have examples of unstructured data, for instance, all the tweets or face book postings, which generate a continuous stream of data,” he added.

Big data will need new paradigms for processing and storage, even as users will demand real-time reports, Dr. Kaladhar highlighted. Bringing experts together to brainstorm possible new paradigms was a workshop goal, he stated.

Distinguished speakers at the workshop represented University of Texas at Arlington, University of San Diego, University of Santa Cruz, IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, JNU and IIIT Hyderabad.

Representation from industry was provided by technical leaders from TCS, Ford Motor Company and SAP.

Participants engaged in discussions about the architecture, algorithms and security needed for compiling big data. They made presentations on topics such as Business Intelligence in Real Time, Energy Sensing and Data for Sustainable Societies, Architecture for Computer Vision and Streaming Big Data Analytics.

As an outcome, collaborative groups were formed that will work on project proposals in the areas of Storing Data Securely on the Cloud, Leveraging Encrypted Data, Mobile Computing, Context Metadata for Coastal Analytics and System Phase Transitions.
