The Amrita student chapter of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) won honors recently when its website was adjudged the third best among hundreds of others in the Asia Pacific Region.
Phalgun Lodaya R., Tejal K., Mavani, Vidya R. and Vipassana V., all third-year students of BTech (Computer Science and Engineering) built the award-winning website. These students collected a citation and a cash prize of $ 200 from IEEE for their efforts.
“We learned a lot about web development during the two weeks that we developed this website. Primarily we used Dreamweaver tool,” the students shared.
The student team also received help from alumnus Vamsi Krishna and their mentors, Prof. K. Gangadharan and Mr. Arun Kumar C., of the Department of Information Technology.
The website scored well on criteria such as content, navigation, originality, portability, load time and overall presentation.
Amrita students scored yet again when they bagged the award for the best student chapter of the Computer Society of India (CSI) from among over 500 student chapters at different universities in India.
The award carried with it a citation and a certificate.
Over the course of the past year, this chapter had organized workshops on ethical hacking and data privacy, quizzes and programming contests.
Most popular among these were Code Crusade, a software coding and debugging contest and a motivational seminar on Employability & Soft Skills by Dr. Vishal Talwar of London School of Economics.
But the chapter strove to excel beyond the classroom as well, by undertaking community development through classes for children of three tribal and village schools at Chinnampathy, Muruganapathy and CG Pudur.
Now this CSI Amrita chapter with 200 students members is making a bid to host the 29th CSI National Student Convention in early 2013.
Chapter activities are guided by Mr. Prashant R. Nair, Ms. Sathiya R. R. and Mr. B. A. Sabarish of the Amrita School of Engineering.
“All these recognitions are yet more indicators that Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is emerging as an international leader in professional, co-curricular and research activities. All our Amrita student chapters including Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) are winning laurels,” Mr. Prasanth proudly noted.
