Abstract : A chitosan (CN) biopolymer reinforced with montmorillonite (MMT) clay was prepared by solution mixing. The polymer solution was cast into films, dried at room temperature and characterized. The chemical structure and morphology were analyzed using FT-IR and XRD. The MMT was well dispersed and exfoliated in composites, though slight agglomeration was observed for composites with higher percentage of MMT. The mechanical properties of the composite were analyzed and the composite showed 150% increase in tensile strength over the virgin chitosan film. The thermal properties and degradation behavior were studied using DSC and TGA respectively. MMT reinforced chitosan composites had higher thermal degradation temperature than unfilled chitosan. The polymeric beads of CN-MMT were formed by suspension polymerization in KOH medium and sorption kinetic studies where performed on the same.
