Abstract : This work presents the implementation of regenerative braking method of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for electric vehicle (EV) with two distinct control methods. Regenerative braking control is realized through maximum torque per ampere control (MTPA) and direct torque control along with space vector modulation technique (SVM-DTC). In MTPA control, the current control of the motor is done with the help of a lookup table to achieve the smallest stator current for the required torque. In DTC-SVM control, space vector modulation method is incorporated to control IPMSM, and instant torque responses are controlled by steering the speed of the rotating stator flux linkage vector. To emulate the vehicle environment for regenerative braking control, the Mahindra e2o EV model is developed. The urban drive cycle ECE-15 is considered for the developed Mahindra e2o model to implement the proposed regenerative control methods. By applying the ECE-15 on to the developed EV model, the required speed and torque that has to be delivered by the IPMSM are calculated. The whole system is modelled and simulated in Simulink, and the validity of the developed regenerative braking system for both control methods is verified and their performances are compared.
