Our Chancellor’s Words: Save water for future generations

By 2025, ⅔ of the World population will experience WATER SCARCITY. 70% of India’s groundwater is already contaminated. The world is going through a challenging situation now. In the future, there might even be a war to get access to water. If it is a problem of the future, we should also be concerned and responsible now.

Amrita sets an example of Saving resources like water and other natural wealth and making its use efficient.

Water conservation initiatives inside the university campus

1.Separate water pipelines
A dedicated pipeline carries recycled water to toilets where it is used for flushing purposes. There is a different pipeline that carries fresh water for drinking, washing, and bathing purposes.

2.Eco-Dish Washing
All the plates are washed together instead of washing individually. On average 45000 plates are washed in a day. 70,000 liters of water is required to clean 45,000 plates individually but water usage comes down to 25,000 liters when plates are being washed in the group.

3.”Water Resources System Planning and Design” course in B.Tech
‘Water Resources System Planning and Design’ is a course offered in B. Tech at School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to educate students.

4.Aerators in Water taps
Aerators are being fixed in all the taps. It helps in reducing the wastage of water. The flow of water is much more without Aerators which leads to wastage of water.

5.Laundry service for students
Usage of water will be much higher if students wash their clothes individually. Keeping this in mind, Laundry services are provided to the students which help in reducing the usage of water. The water discharged from the laundry facility is recycled and reused.

6.Sensors in Drinking water taps
Many a time drinking water gets wasted due to improper closure of taps. In order to overcome this problem, Sensors are fixed in drinking water taps.

7.Reuse of water
Water used for washing and bathing is recycled through a proper mechanism and used for agricultural purposes.

8.Awareness about Conscious water usage
Posters, Signboards and Slogans regarding conscious water usage are displayed near water taps. This gives timely reminders to the students and staff to use the water judiciously and consciously.

Jivamritam – Amrita’s Largest water initiatives in the country
Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi has committed to increasing awareness about the importance of water conservation and efforts to develop community-driven technological interventions to improve access to water sources throughout rural India.

Jivamritam, a community-based purified drinking water program, was conceived to develop community-based business models to address the world’s challenges on water sustainability, build water-wise communities through community engagement, and build awareness about water quality, usage, and sustainable water conservation techniques. Presently, more than 240 Jivamritam systems are active along the length and breadth of Kerala.

Initiatives

  • Following World Water Day’s theme, ‘leaving no one behind’ many collective efforts were taken to ensure clean and safe drinking water is available for the one in need. Moved by the plight of villagers in India who lack access to clean water sources, Tel Aviv University & Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham launched a project on sustainable water governance through women’s empowerment
  • The Amrita Center of Biotechnology introduced a Microbial Fuel Cell, which utilizes energy from bacterial growth in wastewater to generate electricity while simultaneously bringing about the purification of the wastewater–an important step in addressing the sanitation and energy problems that are very relevant in our country.
  • Deployed clean drinking water filters in 31 flood-hit communities in Kerala. Thirty-one students from 14 Universities in Japan, from International Volunteers of University Student Association IVUSA, worked alongside 12 of Amrita University’s Masters of Social Work (MSW) students and faculty members to deploy clean drinking water filters in 31 flood-hit communities in the Kerala State districts of Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, in February 2019. The effort was part of the Jivamritam clean water initiative for rural India.
