M. Tech. in Renewable Energy Technologies is a program offered at School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore campus.
Renewable energy being the most important application area of engineering and technology in the twenty first century, this graduate programme is designed for quality learning in that sector. RE sector needs manpower with design and engineering skills in RE systems and components – this programme targets to impart these. The curriculum has an emphasis on solar and wind energy systems, in tune with the Indian national missions on these. Job avenues targeted are RE equipment manufacturers, farm developers and system operators; also, the qualified human resource requirement in RE teaching and research is potentially high.
This is a program with a global focus on integrating sustainability into the future through outstanding education. This Post Graduate Program offered by the university empowers us to pursue a fulfilling and compassionate career ahead with global standards of excellence in all our endeavors, namely, teaching, research, consultancy, and continuing education, and to remain accountable in our core and support functions through self-evaluation and continuous improvement. Through a well-rounded curriculum, students gain comprehensive knowledge in renewable energy technologies, policy, economics, and sustainability, equipping them with a broad skillset sought after in the renewable energy sector.
The learning is guided through two parallel streams of electrical and mechanical disciplines. Core courses and electives of specialization are offered by faculty from various departments like Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Aerospace, Business Management, Science etc. A Renewable Energy laboratory developed through assistance from C-WET (presently, NIWE), MNRE and DST, Government of India, equipped with hard and soft experiment systems and real field data collection systems, provides active training support to the programme. Collaborations with global academic and industrial establishments too help in imparting quality learning in this programme. Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore won the prestigious IREDA – NIWE National Award 2016-17 for the Best Institution of Higher Learning in Wind Energy thanks to the research facilities and contributions made in this laboratory.

Collaborations
Renewable energy integration to electric power grid is a challenge even in developed countries as the intermittency and variability of the energy sources like solar radiation and wind speed affect the essential power balance on the grid, if a large share of the demand is required to be met from renewable resources. In order to address research in this domain, the laboratory has a rooftop installed solar panels and wind electric generator used for training and research. A weather monitoring system provides data for such studies. The solar and wind power generated on roof top can either be connected to the battery-inverter unit, or fed to the local grid through Grid tied inverter. The lab has a micro grid research facility developed in house. This facility is known as a Smart Micro Grid Simulator or SMGS. DST of India and VINNOVA of Sweden sponsored development of this facility.
Real Time Data Collection Units continuously monitor voltages, currents, and frequency at all nodes of the microgrid and transfer the data wirelessly to the control server. The data collected are transmitted and recorded with time stamp. The solar and wind generators connected to the SMGS make a unique research facility. This lab has wind turbine emulators fitted with all types of generators – cage induction, DFIG and permanent magnet generator.
In addition to this, the laboratory is equipped with various Software packages such as WAsP , Windpro, ETAP, DigSILENT PowerFactory, Ansys Fluent and MATLAB etc.
A dedicated Renewable Energy Laboratory funded by C-WET with a small sized wind turbine of 500W capacity.
Amorphous and Polycrystalline Solar panels are installed for studying the various scenario in real time conditions.
The Laboratory is equipped with Smart Grid, Net Metering and Wind Emulators of DFIG and PMSG.
The course is a really good one in covering different aspects of all renewable energy fields starting from technical to policies. It prepares you well enough in entering the real industry dynamics.
The course has given me a strong in-depth understanding of renewable energy sources and their utilization methodologies.
The program helped me develop my design and engineering skills in renewable energy systems and components, as well as my analytical and problem-solving abilities. The program also enhanced my communication and teamwork skills, as I had to work on several projects and presentations with my peers and faculty. The program also prepared me for placement opportunities in the renewable energy sector, which is one of the fastest-growing and most promising sectors in the world. I am very satisfied with the quality and outcome of the program, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing a career in renewable energy.
Amrita’s renewable energy program impressively integrates theoretical concepts and practical applications, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of sustainable energy. To elevate the program, I recommend fostering stronger industry ties to facilitate internships or collaborative projects, ensuring students gain hands-on experience aligned with current industry practices. This adjustment would enhance the program’s efficacy in preparing students for impactful roles in the evolving renewable energy sector.
This programme started at the right time in 2014, when RE was booming across the globe. Recommends to include BESS storage & hybrid system (solar and BESS- on/ off grid) as separate courses.
The placements were good, and teachers tried their best to refer us to various companies amidst the Covid. The program subjects were useful when it comes to the field work
Though it was a COVID batch, the concepts were taught to us in a very credible manner, and appreciate all the efforts taken by the institution for the successful completion of the Program
RET course is the one of the best opportunity to get a job opportunity in renewable sector.
Program was very useful as it gave me an insight into Renewable Energy and the knowledge, I acquired during the span of 2 years has helped me pretty well in my work place as well.
The program is quite useful in terms of placements as well as gaining a basic knowledge about what work is done in the renewable energy field
Faculties were very supportive during online lectures. They focused on every student to participate in the discussion. Industrial Software oriented training should have been included in the curriculum.
Overall course is good and we will get a good exposure about Renewable energy, but if we get access to various applications in renewable industry it will be very useful pursue the career in various streams in renewable industry.
It was a good program with lot of learnings and opportunities.
A great program that holds significance in a time when the world is moving towards net zero emissions. The program helped gain knowledge and insight on various ways I could contribute towards this goal. My only suggestion would be to emphasize more hands on training and perhaps organise visits to various generation plants/R&D labs in our country. The practical knowledge from our Industrial visits was a valuable experience that has helped me in my professional career as well
The M.Tech RET program at Amrita features a meticulously crafted curriculum that seamlessly integrates high-quality theoretical and practical sessions. Aligned with current market trends, the program is thoughtfully designed, drawing from both industrial and research standards. Graduates of this program emerge as highly skilled professionals well-equipped to thrive in the competitive job market.
