Development of Bronze Alloys and Comparison of Their Mechanical and Wear Properties

Bronze alloys (Cu-Sn) are widely used as bearing materials in aircrafts, automobiles, machine tools, and general engineering applications such as dies for plastic injection molding. However, they are in use for a long time in wrought and cast forms, without enhancing their strength and hardness. In order to improve its strength and tribological properties, this research work has been undertaken using one or combination of the following methods: addition of Ni to induce spinodal hardening by heat treatment; reinforcement of the Bronze matrix with particulates to form a metal matrix composite; modification of its sub-surface with Al2O3 or SiC addition to form a functionally gradient material. The mechanical and wear properties of these materials will be measured and applications for these materials will be suggested.
