Abstract : Processors are the computing elements of most of the embedded systems. To cater the increased performance demand, more and more transistors are fused into a single chip, which indirectly accelerates the power consumption of the system. Most of the embedded systems are portable battery powered systems. The usefulness of the system depends on the battery life, which is determined by the power consumption of the entire system. This paper presents a detailed study on the factors that influence and cause power consumption of an embedded processor/controller. The knowledge about the elements that influence the processor functioning leading to power consumption, is vital to devise newer mechanisms for power consumption reduction. The main parameters and issues that have an impact on the power consumption of an embedded processor is also discussed
