World Quality Day was observed on the Amrita campuses this past week in solidarity with this UN-sponsored event that is now becoming increasingly popular in several nations around the world.

The first-ever World Quality Day was celebrated in 1990. The UN meant for this to help raise international awareness about the important role quality can play in ensuring a nation’s prosperity.

For nearly two decades now, this annual event has been celebrated world-wide on the second Thursday of November, every year.

Quality Day This year, Amrita joined the Quality Council of India (QCI) in this important celebration. Incidentally, Dr. Giridhar J. Gyani, Secretary General, Quality Council of India, was at Amrita recently to hand over the NABH Hospital Accreditation Certificate of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS).

Led by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of AIMS, students, faculty and hospital staff at the Health Sciences campus came together in an effort to “… commit and re-dedicate ourselves to our ongoing quality process …”

“At Amrita, we must ensure that quality is the hall-mark of every small service rendered,” emphasized senior administrators, who participated. “This means that it has to be a team effort.”

The celebrations included a quiz event and an essay writing competition. Doctors, nurses and students participated in large numbers. The quiz was won by the nursing staff team. Individual winners of the essay writing competition took home cash prizes.

At Amrita’s Coimbatore campus also, an essay writing competition was organized for faculty and students. Perhaps fittingly, the celebrations were led by Dr. Sriram of the Dept of Chemial Engineering, who has a Six Sigma Black Belt training certification.

Bangalore campus also organized an essay writing competition. At the Amritapuri campus, Team Vidya that maintains the on-campus digital library / repository, used the occasion to highlight the importance of this event on its intranet site.
