On World Toilet Day, Amrita Spotlights its Integrated Smart Sanitation Solutions for the Indian Masses

​​In honor of World Toilet Day on November 19th, 2016, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Sanitation Biotechnology Lab spotlighted its commitment to develop integrated smart sanitation solutions for the Indian masses.

As part of Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat (Clean India) and Namami Gange (Clean Ganges) projects​, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Chancellor Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi,​ donated Rs.100 crore (US$15 million) for the construction of toilets in the poorest villages surrounding the Ganga River​, during ​Her birthday celebrations​ in 2015.​ ​She also offered an amount of Rs.100 crore for construction of toilets and sanitation works in Kerala​ as part of efforts to end life-threatening diseases affecting people of rural Kerala stemming from contaminated water sources, caused by widespread open ​defecation.

In 2014, Amrita School of Biotechnology was selected among the top six Indian innovators to contribute to the development of sanitation solutions as part of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge: India.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has had partnered with The India-Canada Centre for Innovative Multidisciplinary Partnerships to Accelerate Community Transformation and Sustainability (IC-IMPACTS to develop and implement community-based solutions to meet the most urgent needs of Canada and India: poor water quality, unsafe and unsustainable infrastructure, and poor health from waterborne and infectious diseases. The collaboration is to develop and test local solutions that can be scaled up across India and Canada.
