IEEE International Conference on VLSI Systems, Architecture, Technology & Applications

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering of Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru Campus, hosted the 2nd IEEE International Conference on VLSI Systems, Architecture, Technology and Applications (VLSI – SATA 2016) with a theme of System Solutions for Emerging Applications from 10th to 12th January 2016.

The conference was a 3-day scheduled program, technically co-sponsored by IEEE Bangalore Section, IEEE CAS, VLSI Society of India and IETE. The financial sponsors were Maxim Integrated, Intel, Mahindra Comviva, Cadence, Mentor Graphics, Infineon Technologies and Convergent Technologies. This conference is an annual forum to bring together researchers, educators and practitioners to discuss a broader spectrum of VLSI topics from Systems, Architecture, Design Technology and Applications to understand and enhance the knowledge of integration of VLSI Systems, Architecture and Design for emerging applications.

VLSI-SATA 2016 began with preconference tutorials on 10th January 2016. The first tutorial was “Go2UVM, the fastest way to get started with the semiconductor industry’s most adopted Verification Methodlogy (UVM)” by Mr. T. Nagasundaram, Mr. AzharAhammad and Ms. Anupam Maurva, CVC, Bangalore. The theme for the second tutorial was “Processing beyond Processors- Redefining DSP Systems” by Mr. Tony Thomas and Mr. Mohammed Chalil, Logosent Semiconductors, Bangalore. The third tutorial, by Mr. H. Balachandar and Mr. G. Prakash, Coreel Technologies, Bangalore, helped understand the Advanced Zynq-7000 SOC architecture and ADC with Vivado. The final tutorial was Design, Fabrication and Testing of Microwave CMOS Distributed Amplifiers and Oscillators by Dr. Kalyan Bhattacharyya and Dr. Bala Tripura Sundari, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore.

Participants expressed that it was a good experience for them, as it gave them an opportunity to meet more people involved in the field of VLSI. Most of them conveyed that this helped them get more exposure to the knowledge content on the VLSI Design and they are looking forward to many such inspiring activities in the near future.

The conference  was inaugurated on 11th January 2016 by the Chief Guests Dr. Josef Hausner, Division Vice President, R & D IP Strategy, Intel Mobile Communications, Germany and Dr. Forrest Brewer, Professor, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, in the presence of Br. Dhanaraj, Campus Director; Dr. S. G. Rakesh, Associate Dean; Dr. Shikha Tripathi, Professor and Chairman, Department of ECE; Dr. Sudarshan T. S. B. , Professor and Chairman, Department of Computer Science & Engineering; Dr. N S. Murty, Conference  General Chair and Dr. Navin Kumar, Technical Programme  Committee Chair. The event recorded important Key Notes: “5G Communication: Vision and Implication on Wireless and Silicon Technologies” by Dr. Josef Hausner, and “Hardened, Low-Power Communication Links: VLSI Design in Extreme Environments” by Dr. Forrest Brewer. The talks were followed by paper presentation sessions in three tracks (Systems and Architecture, Technology and Applications) witnessing good participation from Academia & Industry.

The second day of the conference started with two invited talks.  Mr. Vinay Shenoy, Managing Director, Infineon Technologies, India, delivered a talk on “Emerging Trends in Automotive Electronics” and Mr. Rajsekaran Soruban, Technology Leader – Minimum Viable Products, Mahindra Comviva enthralled the audience with his talk on “Fundamental Muscles for Innovation”.  The talks were followed by paper presentation sessions in three tracks.

The conference witnessed participants from various Universities and industry professionals and received good feedback and response, setting the perfect interactive atmosphere for early 2016.  All are looking forward to VLSI-SATA 2017, which will be announced soon.
