Constructivism in Science Education

We all have a framework through which we relate to the world. Our day-to-day experiences usually fit within this framework easily. Sometimes though, new experiences may force us to re-evaluate the framework, and maybe even consider changing it, if necessary. Constructivism is a theory in psychology that says that most people learn in this manner.

Constructivism in Science EducationThe theory of constructivism emphasizes learning from experience, learning from failure and learning from others’ failures. Constructivism has led to newer and innovative teaching methods in schools and colleges all over the world. Constructivism in Science Education – a new book by Dr. Sridevi of the Amrita School of Education at Mysore brings together several key concepts in this area.

“Children are naturally curious. Their curiosity motivates them to question. Every child constructs knowledge on his or her own,” states the author. “The book discusses philosophical, psychological and pedagogical bases of constructivism, emphasizing constructivism in science education. It is meant for teachers, teacher trainees, teacher educators and researchers.”
Published by the Discovery Publishing House (New Delhi), the book retails at Rs. 675/-. Available at leading bookstores around the country, it is the outcome of research work carried out by the author as well as insights gleaned from review of related literature. Dr. Sridevi is a doctorate from the University of Mysore. Students from several universities in the State have sought her out to be the primary guide for their M Ed and M Phil theses.
