Amritavarsham61 Witnesses the Launch of Innovative Low-Cost Products for Rural India

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been on the path of research oriented education since its inception. During Amritavarsham61, the birthday celebration of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amrita TBI launched low-cost innovative products for rural India.  The products, Amrita A-One Fuel Maker (A-ONE) and Amrita All purpose Solar Dryer, were officially launched by Honorable Member of Parliament Shri K. C. Venugopal, in the presence of Chancellor Amma. The products were developed by the team, STAR@ Amrita TBI (Social Transformation Achieved through Rural Innovations).

Amrita A-One Fuel Maker (A-ONE)

In rural Indian villages where people walk up to 2 kilometers to get firewood for their daily cooking needs, alternates to firewood are briquettes. There are very few manually operated briquette machines available in the industry. They are operated on pressing technology that requires huge manual effort. Amrita’s A-One Fuel Maker, a patent-pending technology, promises to change the lifestyle of villagers and their culinary practices through environmentally friendly solutions. The A-ONE design has the following unique features:

  1. Uses waste bio mass material instead of wood,
  2. Uses pedaling power for creation of briquettes reducing manual effort.
  3. Yields 80% increase in throughput.
  4. Costs 85 % less.

A-ONE is thus designed not only to meet cooking needs of villagers, but paves the way for income generation through high throughput briquette production.

Amrita All purpose Solar Dryer

The Amrita All-Purpose Solar Dryer is designed for drying vegetables, fruits and herbal leaves using indirect passive heating technology, thereby preserving mineral and vitamin compositions. Amrita All-Purpose Solar Dryer can process up to 5 kilograms of fruits and vegetables and is designed for easy assembly, setup and can be compacted from about 54 inches height to about 5 inches height for easy transportation. Farmers can preserve their produce for extended periods and avoid distress sale during low-demand periods.

STAR@ Amrita TBI focuses on the development of affordable, innovative, market-driven solutions that can be readily deployed in rural India. Amrita TBI, an incubator for startupsm is a joint initiative of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
