The ninth tribal outreach programme ‘Amritasmitam 2016’ by the Department of Prosthodontics and Public Health Dentistry of Amrita School of Dentistry was successfully conducted at Kalpetta from August 31st to September 3rd, 2016, as a part of 63rd birthday celebrations of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Chancellor Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Amma.

Under this program, 65 patients were provided free complete dentures. Apart from this around eighty patients received free dental check up at the dental clinic. Basic dental care was provided for the needy patients. The program was held at an Amrita institution, the Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital, an outpatient facility which provides free medical treatment for tribal patients and low cost treatment for the general public.

The department of Public Health Dentistry conducted a three-day community diagnosis program with an aim to get an insight into the health care needs of tribal community in Wayanad based on concerns expressed by them. A total of 28 houses were surveyed by 9 number team. Health care providers and community leaders who were working for the upliftment of tribals were also interviewed. Based on the felt needs and expert opinions, a causal loop diagram was developed and actionable recommendations were proposed.

The Amrita team comprised of 39 members that included faculty members, postgraduates, dental technician and students of denture mechanics course. The team led by Dr. Anil MatthewDr. Chandrasekhar J.Dr. Joe Joseph and Mr. Vinod ensured successful completion of both the programs.

The valedictory function was held on 3rd September at 2:00pm. The function was graced by Swami Poornamritananadapuri and MLA C. K. Saseendran. Dentures were delivered during the function and the report of community diagnosis programme was handed over to the MLA.

Follow up for the denture patients is to be held in the first week of October.
