Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Students’ Research Paper Selected as Editor’s Choice of the Year 2016

The research article titled, “A Comparative Study on Decomposition of Test Signals Using Variational Mode Decomposition and Wavelets” , authored by Anusha S., Ajay Sriram (Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and Dr. T. Palanisamy (Department of Mathematics, Amrita School of Engineering- Coimbatore, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham) has been selected as Editor’s Choice of the year 2016 under the category of Information Technology by the International Journal on Electrical Engineering and Informatics, a quarterly journal in the field of electrical engineering and informatics published by the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Institut Teknologi, Bandung, Indonesia.

The paper will be recognized at the annual meeting of International Journal on Electrical Engineering and Informatics held at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany on 3 July, 2017. The authors will be honoured by memento and certificates. There will also be a cash award of USD 2000.

Joseph Patrick, Editor in Chief, International Journal on Electrical Engineering and Informatics, School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics , Institut Teknologi Bandung has invited all the authors to participate in the ceremony and receive the award in the annual meeting.

According to Dr. Palanisamy, the motivation for the work arose from the investigations of brain waves such as electroencephalogram and visual evoked responses, the desire to distinguish between multiple echoes in a noisy environment in radar and sonar and the need to locate the seismic source in seismology. Under all such occasions, there has been a requirement to seek methods by which composite waveforms may be decomposed. The effort in this paper is to identify a decomposition technique that would yield efficient denoising results in spite of the absence of prior knowledge or spatial homogeneity. It presents a comparative study of the decomposition of spatially inhomogeneous test functions using wavelet method and VMD technique.

The students started to learn the required basics of Math for this work from the third semester after their association with Dr. Palanisamy. The students preferred that the paper be published by a Scopus Indexed Journal, rather than read at a conference. Though the professor had warned them that getting published might be difficult to achieve, they confidently accepted the challenge and were determined to publish the research. “I feel their work and understanding about a research article deserves this award. Congratulations to the students and I feel happy to be associated with these students,” said Dr. Palanisamy.

“Every real research work is carried out for the joy of research and all such works really deserve to be awarded. However, honoring undergraduate students by such awards will motivate many young students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to actively involve early in research activities. This has become possible only with the divine blessings of our Chancellor and the status of institution which could attract talented and potential students for research” says Dr. Palanisamy.
