Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Car Free Day Focuses on Cycle Rally and 10 Km Fun Run

Five years ago, a group of socially committed Amritians decided to conduct a cycle rally. This September 22nd, 2015 marked its 5th prolific edition. In the current juncture when the world is finding it difficult to cope with escalating air pollution, the event was really relevant. September 22nd is celebrated as “world car free day” and as a part of it, Amrita Sanjeevani, the seva organisation at Amritapuri Campus, conducted a cycle rally and 10 km fun run from Karunagapally to Amritapuri.

The event was inaugurated at Karunagapally by Dr. S. Chithra IAS, Asst. Collector. Mr. Sivasudan pillai, Asst. Commissioner of Police, Kollam and Mr. H. Saleem, Municipal Counselor, Karunagapally, were the guests of honor. It terminated at Amritapuri campus with a ceremony which was addressed by Mr. P. Prakash IPS, Commissioner of Police, Kollam. As a part of the event, a carpooling website was launched. This is an important initiative to reduce the unnecessary use of cars. The ultimate aim of the celebration is to promote the relevance of going for green methods of travel, such as cycling and walking as a substitute for cars and thereby bringing a big decrement in the contribution of cars to harmful air pollution.

Car Free Day witnessed the active participation of around 800 students and faculty members which made the event a monumental success.
