Amrita School of Pharmacy Students Visit Milma Dairy

Second year B. Pharm and Pharm D. students (2016 batch) of Amrita School of Pharmacy visited Milma Dairy, Edappally branch. During the Milma Visit, the students were introduced to the largest lab of India for milk processing and equipment used for quality control.

For the better understanding of the functioning of the factory, the students were split into two groups. While one group was taken inside the milk processing unit, the other group had time to spent at the Milma outlet. The students were accompanied by Mr. Prathapan, Assistant Supervisor, Milma.

Mr. Prathapan introduced the processes and its importance of the milk processing unit. Inside the milk processing unit, there were large units with capacity of about 11,000 litres, where milk is separated from impurities such as mud, lymphocytes, etc. The factory hygiene mandatory procedures were followed in all the processes.

Mr. Prathapan also explained the journey of milk from the farmers to the final packed milk in cities. He described the methods of preventing milk from spoiling, by stirring in layers of Freon gas, followed by pasteurization. He also explained preparation and packing of milk peda and ice cream processing. Processing equipment and units such as curd processing container, incubator and cold storage rooms were also shown to the students.
