Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences observed International Nurses Day: Celebrating a Noble Profession

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. This year, the International Council of Nurses commemorated this important day with the theme – Nurses: a Force for Change – a Vital Resource for Health.

The Department of Nursing Services at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences hosted Nurses Week Celebration, prior to the International Nurses Day, from May 2-9, 2014 with a variety of cultural and sport events. Bri. Sai Bala, Nursing Director, opened the sports events on May 02.

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences observed International Nurses Day on May 14, 2014. The ceremony was inaugurated by Sampoojya Swami Poornamritanandapuri, General Secretary, Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Swamiji in his inaugural address stressed about the need of care and compassion in the present world and nurses being rightly positioned in rendering these.

Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director, in his special address congratulated the nurses for providing remarkable nursing care throughout. Dr. S. K. Ramachandran, Deputy Medical Superintendent, appreciated the untiring efforts of the nurses in improving the quality of health care at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.

Addressing the audience, Professor K. T. Moly, Principal, Amrita College of Nursing, shared her rich and varied experiences as a nurse. She also unveiled the International Nurses Day 2014 theme – Nurses: a Force for Change – a Vital Resource for Health. Sr. Vishalakshi P. and Sr. Vimala J., Deputy Nursing Officers, also addressed the gathering.

Various prizes for educational and training (such as best nursing unit in patient satisfaction, incident reporting, total training and infection control practice) and extracurricular events were also distributed as part of the grand celebration. T4F1-GICU nursing unit at Amrita bagged the maximum score in extracurricular events and won the overall championship trophy for the year 2014. The event had a graceful end by showcasing the talents of the members of the nursing family.
