Tony Thomas, 2016 graduate and an alumnus of FOSS @ Amrita, had the opportunity to attend the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) Mentors Summit at Google Tech. A total of 2,524 mentors were involved, and only around 300 of them were invited by Google for the Mentors Summit at Sunnyvale, California.

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) Mentors Summit is an annual unconference held at Google Tech Centre, Sunnyvale, to celebrate and improve GSoC, their Open Source Programs (OSP) initiative. Students submit and work on two month long projects with participating organizations, earning a total of 5500 USD in three installments. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham had 14 selections. Tony Thomas, a 2014 GSoC student and FOSS @ Amrita club alumnus, was delegated by Wikimedia Foundation to attend the Mentors Summit at Google Tech Centre from 28-30 October, 2016. Previously, upon completing the GSoC project for Wikimedia Foundation in 2014, Tony was selected as an organization admin and mentored students in the later rounds of GSoC.

The Mentors Summit had 40 minute lightning discussions and talks. Participants were given a free board with timeslots and post-it notes to schedule a session. The discussions were mainly focused on getting the students to stick with their mentoring organization after successful completion of projects as maintainers. In 2016, Google selected 1206 students from 67 countries who submitted project proposals to 178 mentoring organizations. A total of 2,524 mentors were involved, and around 300 of them were invited by Google for the Mentors Summit at Sunnyvale, California.

Tony Thomas is currently doing his masters in Internet Technology and Architecture from TU Berlin as part of EIT ICT Innovation program. As he is a long time member of the FOSS club at Amritapuri, this is indeed another addition to its long achievement list.
