​International Conference on VLSI Systems, Architecture, Technology and Applications (VLSI – SATA 2015) Held

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru organized an International Conference on VLSI Systems,Architecture, Technology and Applications (VLSI –SATA 2015) from January 8 – 10,2015. The conference was technically co-sponsored by IEEE, IEEE Bangalore Section, IEEE Computer Society Bangalore Chapter and IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Bangalore Chapter. The conference also received industrial sponsorship from Wipro, Infineon, Maxim Integrated and Cadence.​  The theme of the conference was “SystemsSolutions for Emerging Applications.” Pre-conference tutorials held on January 8 provided an overview of various topics such as Digital Signal Processing, Validation and Verification of Automotive Embedded Systems, Input-output Pads– purpose and circuit design aspects and Introduction to AccelleraTransaction Level Modeling (TLM) 2.0. The tutorials included a full day Texas Instruments tutorial coordinated by Dr. C. P. Ravikumar, a tutorial from Dr. Subra Ganesan from Oakland University, USA and two tutorials from Intel Mobile Communications, Bangalore.

The conference was marked with the presence of Campus Director Br. Dhanraj Swami, Associate Dean Dr. S. G. Rakesh, Chairperson & Professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dr. T. S. B. Sudarshan, VLSI – SATA 2015 Conference Chair and Professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dr. Tirumale Ramesh, IEEE Bangalore Section Chair Ravikiran and delegates from the industry and academia. More than 70 delegates fromaround the globe attended the conference and presented high quality papers that added to the body of knowledge of the audience.

The highlight of the conference was its rich and diversified technical content including distinguished key note speakers from USA and India and  Chief Guest Dr. Bala Bharadvaj from Boeing, a major US based corporation with branches in India..   Dr. Bala Bharadvaj, Leader of Engineering and Technology, Boeing India and Managing Director of Boeing Research and Technology in India, said that engineering students should understand the principles of engineering subjects and apply them to solve complex engineering problems. He also added that big aerospace corporation like Boeing also needs VLSI research and innovations in electronics to support its product development to compete in the aerospace domain market.

Professor Gene Frantz, a former Texas Instruments Fellow in USA and presently Professor in Practice, Rice University, USA, presented an enriching inaugural note over Skype and declaimed his views that we need to start thinking about analog computing again to face the new challenges for innovation in DSP architectures.

Mr. Guru Ganesan, Managing Director of ARM India presented an excellent talk on an interesting topic, Intelligent Controllers, and how these controllers can be used to build smart cities. He spoke about how the electronic devices are becoming more intelligent, but at the same time how important it is to hide the technology (make the complexity of the technology invisible to the users) from the consumers for mass adoption.

Dr. Vijaykrsihnan Narayanan, Professor, Computer Science and Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in USA, presented an enlightening talk on how future electronics system design can be impacted by emerging electronics devices.  In his talk, he echoed that new physics, new devices, and new computational paradigms are needed to sustain progress in the semiconductor industry. He also pointed out the potential impact of the new paradigm shift for supporting energy-scavenged assistive health systems and intelligent vision systems.

The second day of the conference began with an enlightening session by Dr. S. K Nandy, Professor at IISc, on the disruptive computational paradigm of domain specific customizations of runtime reconfigurable silicon cores on a chip to achieve supercomputing on silicon. His talk evoked the curiosity of the audience and an excellent interactive exchange ensued. Following Dr. S. K. Nandy’s talk, the conference saw some excellent high quality papers originating in the area of systems,architecture and technology, offered in the two parallel sessions.

“The feedback from the audience was in general was very positive and many comments attested that this conference was truly aninternational conference providing very rich technical content and offering lot of opportunities for informal discussions among the participants. The pre-conference tutorials received very positive feedback and  enormously benefited our MTech students,” rejoiced Dr. Tirumale Ramesh, VLSI-SATA 2015 Conference Chair and Professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru.   

“Above all, we can proudly say that the VLSI-SATA 2015 was a grand success and on behalf of the organizing committee of theconference, my many thanks to everybody from the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Bangalore Campus community for their support and help. Without this support, we would not have achieved this milestone.  Some initial thoughts are already underway to expand this conference for next year and make further improvements,” he summed up.
