Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Durham University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish an International Joint Centre of Excellence for Energy Resilience and Decarbonisation (CERD), strengthening India–UK academic collaboration in sustainable energy research. The partnership will focus on clean energy systems, climate resilience, and low-carbon transitions, supporting joint research projects, faculty and doctoral exchanges, co-authored publications, and international funding initiatives.

The eyes are no longer viewed merely as organs of vision—they are increasingly recognised as vital indicators of the body’s internal health. In a significant breakthrough, Dr. Gopal S. Pillai, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, and his team has developed an artificial intelligence–based technology that can predict the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney diseases by analysing retinal images. This pioneering work, jointly conducted by Amrita Hospital, Kochi and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, represents a major step forward in ethical clinical AI and organisational leadership in healthcare. In recognition of this innovation and its potential impact on preventive medicine, The team has been honoured with the Elsevier RAISE Award, a national accolade celebrating excellence in healthcare research and innovation. The retina is the only part of the human body where blood vessels and nerves can be directly visualized without any surgical intervention. Leveraging this unique advantage, Dr. Gopal S. Amrita School of Medicine Signs MoU with CTM–IRTE to Strengthen Forensic and Medico-Legal Education

The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Amrita School of Medicine in Faridabad, India and College of Traffic Management & Forensic Science – Institute of Road Traffic Education (CTM–IRTE) represents a major effort toward enhancing interdisciplinary partnerships among their respective disciplines including forensic sciences, road safety and medical-legal education. This agreement joins the nationally as well as internationally recognized technical knowledge created through Education and the National Safety Council for the Indian automotive industry and Amrita School of Medicine’s highly developed abilities in the fields of clinical medicine, medical education and healthcare delivery systems. Additionally, this partnership will help improve education, research and continuing development of the professional ability in the areas of medical-legal and forensic science education. Enhancing academic and practical learning experiences is the main topic of this partnership. The undergraduate students enrolled in the Forensic Science Program will receive structured access to hospital settings, medicolegal cases as well as post-mortem activities at Amrita Hospital. Indian Myeloma Congress 2026 Concludes at Amrita Hospital, Kochi

The Indian Myeloma Congress 2026 concluded at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, bringing together leading clinicians, researchers, scientists, trainees, and patient groups for three days of intensive academic exchange and collaboration. Hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at the Amrita Health Sciences Campus, Kochi, the congress focused on advancing the understanding and management of multiple myeloma—a complex blood cancer arising from plasma cells in the bone marrow. Around 500 participants from across India and abroad attended the congress, which showcased the latest advances in myeloma treatment and research. International and national experts presented updates on evolving therapeutic strategies, changing disease definitions, and innovations shaping myeloma care globally. Particular focus was given to next-generation treatments, including CAR-T cell therapy, bispecific T-cell engagers (BiTEs), and precision diagnostics such as MRD assessment, NGS, and cytogenetics. A recurring theme across sessions was the importance of early diagnosis and timely initiation of treatment, especially in precursor states and high-risk disease. A two-day National Workshop titled “Sustaining Innovation: Embedding R&D of State Institutions,” held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, with the agenda of fostering strong collaboration between senior policymakers, scientists, and academia throughout India to enhance the capacity to establish viable evidence-based policymaking and sustainable development in India. The workshop was held through a partnership between Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST). The primary goal of the workshop was to develop an institutional framework for incorporating research and development within state institutions, thereby facilitating scalable innovation and delivering impactful results. The UNESCO Chair on Assistive Technologies in Education, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, recently hosted the landmark event, “AI-Enabled Assistive Technologies for Inclusive Education,” a two-day intensive program serving as a vital pre-Summit event to the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Bringing together a synergy of policymakers, educators, researchers, and technologists, the event explored a singular, powerful vision: leveraging Artificial Intelligence to transform technology from a potential barrier into a universal bridge for learners with diverse needs. Gracefully Wrapped Up One World, One Heart Grand Finale At Amritapuri Campus

The Grand Finale of One World, One Heart, hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, concluded successfully at the Amritapuri Campus. It attracted students from all over Kerala to participate in a significant educational and cultural program. Approximately 500 participants from grades 8 to 12 gathered at the Amritapuri Campus for the final state-level competitions. ​The celebrations were in honor of Amma’s historic speech at the UN marking its 25th anniversary. It was the first and only time an address was made in Malayalam at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York. It became a landmark that echoed her message of universal compassion, unity, and global harmony. The historic event was honored by Shri V. Madhusoodanan Nair, renowned poet, critic, who shared, “The great message here is that our one world is one heart. Unity means that there is only one religion and only one mind. The national techfest of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham concluded as Anokha 2026 with large-scale participation from students, industry, and academia to showcase cutting-edge innovations through technical competitions (i.e., hackathons and workshops), exhibitions, and cultural programming taking place on campus. The Anokha 2026 flagship event was the CEO Conclave. This event attracted over 15 CEOs and other industry experts from numerous leading companies (i.e., Ashok Leyland, HCL Technologies, TVS Motors, Terracarb, MFAR Carbon, Intrucept Labs, and DLF). The CEO Conclave consisted of multiple interactive panels and discussions with faculty members, researchers, and students, along with awarding numerous awards to faculty and students from various schools and departments. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham conducted its convocation ceremony for students from its Amritapuri, Kochi, Chennai, Ettimadai, Bengaluru and Mysuru campuses at the Kochi campus. More than 1,000 students received their degrees across disciplines, including Dental Sciences, Medicine, Ayurveda, Nursing, Architecture, Arts, Humanities and Commerce, Allied Health Sciences and Engineering. The two-day convocation ceremony conferred degrees on undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars from various faculties. Medals were also awarded to rank holders in recognition of their academic excellence. Swami Poornamritanandapuri, General Secretary of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, delivered the benediction address. Amrita reaffirms its leadership in responsible and human-centric artificial intelligence through its AI Safety Research Lab. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is proud to announce that Dr. Maneesha Vinodini Ramesh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, has been appointed as an Editor of Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS), a leading Q1 international journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The appointment is for a three-year term and reflects the global recognition of Dr. Maneesha’s contributions to disaster resilience, early warning systems, geospatial technologies, and multi-hazard risk research. NHESS is one of the nineteen open-access journals of the European Geosciences Union published by Copernicus Publications. It operates a unique open discussion and transparent peer-review model, where submitted manuscripts appear first as preprints on EGUsphere. ChalaChitra Vaachana: AI based Intelligent Audio Description Platform

Globally, at least 2.2 billion people experience near or distance vision impairment. As of 2022, approximately 4.95 million people in India are blind, which represents about 0.36% of the total population. Most video and audio content are not accessible to the blind, deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) people. To address this gap, the ChalaChitra Vaachana is an innovative audio description platform designed to improve the accessibility of visual content by automatically generating audio descriptions. ChalaChitra Vaachana offers user-friendly web and mobile interfaces for generating intelligent audio descriptions. These descriptions are translated into Indian Sign Language (ISL) videos. Funded by Rashtriya Ayurved Vidyapeeth, Ministry of AYUSH, the Ayurveda Clinical e-Learning (AYURCeL) project aims to create a web platform to showcase the clinical experiences of successful Ayurveda clinicians in a digital form and format that will facilitate continuous clinical learning based on well-documented case studies. The concept of this clinical e-learning platform, jointly developed by the Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ĀCĀRA) and Amrita CREATE, is to develop such an interface in which the real clinical experiences of physicians will be collected, converted into data, and arranged in a structured manner to create an interactive learning environment. The selected cases and the web platform will undergo a rigorous review by an expert team. ​Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham recently joined an International Consortium and won a grant for the project titled,‘Landslide Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment, Preparedness and Early Warning in South Asia: Integrating Meteorology, Landscape and Society (LANDSLIP).’ The project is funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) and the Department for International Development (DFID), UK, under the Science for Humanitarian Emergencies and Resilience (SHEAR) programme. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham partnered with the British Geological Survey, King’s College London, MetOffice, National Research Council CNR – Italy, the Geological Survey of India, Newcastle University, Practical Action Consulting Ltd. and Practical Action Consulting, Nepal, for this project.  The project aims to contribute to better landslide multi-hazard risk assessment, early-warning, and working with communities for better preparedness, for hydrologically controlled landslide and landslide related hazards on a regional spatial scale and on a seasonal to daily temporal scale in India. Amrita Wireless Sensor Network for Landslide Detection System for Himalayas

This project is to study the feasibility for deploying an integrated real-time landslide monitoring and detection system using emerging wireless sensor network technology. The landslide monitoring and detection system will be used for the detection and early warning of rainfall-induced landslides, in three landslide prone areas in the Himalayas, India.  The Wireless Sensor Network for real-time landslide monitoring & detection, which has been functioning in Munnar since 2008, proved its capability when it issued a real-time landslide warning in July 2009. The Government of India have expressed interest in deploying it in other landslide-prone areas, including the rest of Kerala, Himalayan region and Maharashtra. In fact, R Chidambaram, principal scientific advisor to Government of India, visited the deployment site at Munnar with the intention of replicating the system in Northern parts of India. Inflammation is the body’s endeavor at self-defense, the intent being to eradicate harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens and begin the healing process.  It is one of the major steps in normal wound healing process with overlapping events such as formation of granulation tissue, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling. However, chronic inflammation can also lead to a host of diseases. Thus the inflammatory response plays a key role in both health protection and disease generation. Osteoclasts are the multinuclear cells specialized for bone resorption, playing a crucial role in bone remodeling. Osteoclasts have been known to differentiate from hematopoietic precursors of the monocyte/macrophage lineage in the presence of macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF or CSF-1) and receptor activator of ΝF-κΒ ligand (RANKL). Inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) or tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), as well as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) have been reported to induce osteoclast formation indirectly by stimulating osteoblasts. The proposed work envisages the fabrication of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip (LOC) module for non-enzymatic sensing of glucose, cholesterol and creatinine using a single device. This consists of a disposable LOC and a non-disposable electronics module. The use of non-enzymatic sensing module helps to achieve longer shelf life, eliminating the need for stringent storage conditions. This reduces the cost and time of analysis considerably. The point of care diagnostic device provides an effective alternative for the existing expensive and time consuming clinical analysis performed by a trained clinical lab technician. This would thereby enable access to low-cost medical diagnostics even to underprivileged sections of the society.

Quorum Sensing and Biofilm Formation in Microbial Pathogenesis

When encountering a new host, every potential microbial pathogen can stay, acquire nutrients, colonize and then seek another host.  Alternatively the pathogen could express its full battery of virulence factors, and invade the host. The successful attack of a host is now understood to be a communal process called Quorum Sensing (QS). Utilizing QS, pathogens employ a series of chemical signals and sensing systems that jointly engage bacteria to switch from acting as individual cells to operating in a concerted multicellular fashion. QS is the capacity to detect extracellular, small-molecule signals and to subsequently alter gene expression in response to bacterial population densities. The QS systems of bacteria are now known to serve a wide variety of functions beyond a simple estimate of cell density. Some of the processes controlled by QS include bioluminescence and expression of virulence factor(s). Furthermore, QS also plays a pivotal role in the production of healthy and fully developed biofilms which are complex and stable multi-layered structures with defined architecture, in which bacterial communities exist in a sessile form.Many gram positive and gram negative pathogenic bacteria uses QS to control virulence and biofilm formation.
