Dr.Shantikumar Nair, (Ph.D., Columbia University, New York)
Director, Amrita Centre for Nanosciences
Dr. Shanti V. Nair received his doctoral degree from Columbia University in New York in Materials Science and Engineering before joining the faculty of the School of Engineering of the University of Massachusetts in 1985 where he conducted research on a variety of composites, including biocomposites. For the last fifteen years he has been working in the area of polymeric biocomposites.
Dr.K P Soman (Ph.D., IIT-Kharagpur) Professor & Head, CEN
16 years of research & teaching experience at IIT-Kharagpur, AEC-Bhatkal, and Amrita. Has around 60 publications in national & international journals and conference proceedings. Has organized a series of workshops and summer schools in e-commerce, fractals, chaos, neural networks, and wavelets for industry and academia. Currently on deputation to the Center for Excellence in Computational Engineering and Networking (CEN). Authored a book on“Insight into Wavelets”, published by Prentice Hall, New Delhi.
Nine years of industrial experience with 3M Company in Minnesota, Texas, and California (USA). Seven years of experience in academic research as a graduate student at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. Certification of Six Sigma Black Belt Training from 3M. Successfully led quality improvement/cost reduction projects in various 3M Company manufacturing plants in the US, Canada, Singapore, and Japan. Trained over 600 engineers, managers, and operators in statistical methodology & software, and Six Sigma. Has authored and co-authored several publications in US technical journals. Expertise in GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and Internal Auditing.

Engineering College, Trichur under Calicut University. Dr.Venkat Rangan (Ph.D., Berkeley) Vice Chancellor , Amrita University
AMMA appointed Dr.P.Venkat Rangan as Vice Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in July, 2003. He was professor, Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego and founder and director of multimedia lab at the university. Dr. Rangan has been the recipient of President of India’s gold medal from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Chennai in 1984. He ranked first again in his graduate studies in Computer Science at Cornell University. His Ph.D. research work at UC Berkeley, California was again judged as the outstanding Ph.D of the year by IBM. He has also won several prestigious awards including the NCR Research Innovation Award in 1991 and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) National Young Investigator Award in 1993, and 25 best entrepreneurs of US Award by the President of America in 2000. Dr. P. Venkat Rangan, at the age of 33, was one of the youngest full professors at the University of California, San Diego.He has also been Founder CEO of Yodlee Inc., which is a multi-national leader in online aggregation services. The company holds 99% of market share of the back engine for the world’s leading financial portals including leaders like Citi Bank, Bank of America etc. He has to his credit 30 patents and has published over 100 research papers.

Dr.V.Sivakumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering having doctoral degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras in the area of Solid Mechanics in 2006. Prior to research, working for FE code development software companies, Altair Engineering and EASi Technologies at Bangalore as a team leader. While doing the masters programme in structural engineering involved in a research project at ADA, Bangalore, development of a capacitance based accelerometers sponsored by SSPL- New Delhi with Dr.A.R.Upadhya, who is now the Managing Director, NAL, Bangalore. At IIT Madras, involved in a project sponsored by VSSC, ISRO for rocket case stress analysis. Totally having nine years of experience including with Amrita University about one year in teaching, having done many structural analysis with various fields like building frames, automotive bodies and aerospace structures. The areas of interests presently concentrating are: the non-linear structural mechanics, composite mechanics and bucking analysis with real imperfections. Exposure in most of the FE codes like ABAQUS, NASTRAN, LS-DYNA, ANSYS and HYPERWORKS.
Sarith P Sathian recently finished his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Madras. He primarily works in the areas of Gas Dynamics (experimental and computational). He has been working as the Project Officer in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras in various projects of national importance sponsored by ISRO, DRDO, ARDB etc. As part of his PhD work, he developed laser based measurement technique which can be used effectively in low density hypersonic flows. Earlier he obtained his M.S in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Madras. M.S thesis was in the area of Rarefied Gas Dynamics. Before joining IITMadras for his higher studies, he spent two years in Amrita as a lecturer in the department of mechanical engineering. Has two years industrial experience in the field of CAD/CAM/CAE.
He is a recipient of WOS Fellowship from United States Air Force Office for Scientific Research. Published papers in refereed international journals and conferences.
His current area of research includes Compressible internal and external flows, DSMC computation of rarefied gas flows, Aero thermodynamics, Shock tube flows, hypersonic wakes
Dr. V. Nandakumar

Prof.Vallath Nandakumar was awarded his B.Tech degree from the Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1982, in Electrical
Engineering(Electronics). He was awarded his M.S. and Ph.D. in Superconducting from one of world's best Universities, the University of California at Berkeley, has accepted to full-time lead AMRITA UNIVERSITY's TIFAC NATIONAL CENTER of EXCELLENCE (CORE). Dr. Nandakumar has also been researcher at well known electronics multinational companies such as, Tektronix Inc., and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), where he served as a design manager for digital integrated circuits and communication chips.
Joshua Freeman graduated from the University of Oklahoma, in the United States with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, with an options leading towards a Ph.D. in Mathematics. He discovered engineering while in college and decided to pursue a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, also at the University of Oklahoma.
While at the University, he worked with an array or Electric and Solar powered vehicles which competed and won in various national competitions. Upon graduation, he went to work for General Motors, where he was involved in their Diesel Electric Hybrid Bus program for many years. He spent time in the Field Engineering Department with the hybrids and also for the Allison Transmission Division heavy duty automatic transmissions. Primary skills specialized in were control system diagnostics and repair, instrumentation, data collection and measurement, data analysis, and test engineering. Other skills applicable to WINSOC include experience with photovoltaic solar cells, batteries, and Controller Area Network (CAN) systems.
Joshua has teaching experience at Amrita University, India, in subjects such as Automotive Engineering and Renewable Energy. He headed the Robotics Lab at the University and guided various university and student level projects. He is currently on deputation as a Research Associate for the WINSOC project
Dr. Krishna Sree Achuthan

Dr Krishna is the Program Co-Director, Indo-US & International Initiatives at AMRITA University, and until recently was based in San Francisco Bay Area, United States of America. She has a Ph.D. in Semiconductor Fabrication from Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and over 26 US Patents to her credit. She has had key roles in the Indo-US Inter-University Collaborative Initiative for Higher Education and Research, signed into agreement in 2005 by about 20 of the top US Universities including Harvard, Princeton, SUNY Buffalo, etc. (www.amrita.edu and www.amrita.edu/indo-us) as well as the University of California-India Research Initiative in 2006. Most recently, together with Maneesha Ramesh, Dr. Krishna Sree Achuthan co-presented a series of seminars on the Indo-European Winsoc Project at prominent US Universities such as UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UCSD, Purdue, MIT, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Krishna is also the lead faculty advisor on the Indian side for the joint Amrita-UT Austin student project effort in which a team of 10 students from Amrita and UT Austin are jointly carrying out a mega cross-continental project for their honors degree.

Dr.M.P.Chandrasekharan took his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from University of Kerala, M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and Ph.D in the area of Industrial Management from IIT Madras. He was the founder Director NIT Calicut. He has a good number of Publications in International Journals and there are 34,000 items listed by “Google Search” under “M P Chandrasekharan”. He is a referee to six International Journals.
He is the Founder Director, National Institute of Technology, Calicut: June 2002 - June2003, Referee to six International Journals (IJPR, IIE, EJOR, Omega, JOM, Annals of OR), Advisor, UPSC Selection Committee from 1999, Expert Member, Senior Faculty Selection Committee, IIT Madras ( 1995 - 1997) and IIM Kozhikode, Delivered the F W Taylor Memorial Lecture in the Annual Convention of Institution of Engineers (India) 2002, at Chennai. Dr. Nikhil K. Kothurkar, Ph.D (University of Florida)
Nikhil K. Kothurkar joined Amrita Vishwa Viyapeetham in 2007 after completing higher studies in the US. He has a B.E. (Polymer Engineering) from Maharashtra Institute of Technology, University of Pune, India where his final year project was “Hollow Fiber-Reinforced Polyester, Wind Turbine Blades”. In 1999, he moved to Gainesville, Florida, USA, to pursue his graduate studies in the University of Florida, Materials Science and Engineering Department. He worked as a graduate research assistant under the guidance of Dr. Anthony B. Brennan. His research project was developing inorganic-organic particulate nanocomposites for ultrafast infrared optical sensor protection from destructive laser attacks. He graduated with a doctoral degree in August 2004, after defending his dissertation entitled “Solid State Cadmium Sulfide-Polymer Nanocomposites”. He was offered a position as a postdoctoral research associate in the Solar Energy and Energy Conversion Laboratory, University of Florida, for two years. Here developed rugged and crack-free sol-gel photocatalyst coatings on metal and ceramic substrates. He also worked on a project to develop lower cost hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells. He further worked as a Research Scientist in the Clean Energy Research Center, University of South Florida for a year in the fields of photocatalysis and its applications in biomedical devices, and hydrogen production by biomass gasification.
His fields of interest are nanomaterials, photocatalysis, biomedical materials and devices, low cost waster treatment, alternative energies. Currently he is teaching Environmental Science and Engineering and Materials Science, at Amrita.
Dr. Murali Rangarajan, Ph.D (University of Florida, Gainesville USA)
Dr. Murali Rangarajan has recently joined the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham as an Assistant Professor. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Electrochemical Engineering in 1997 from Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi through Madurai Kamaraj University. During this time, he worked on design and lab scale development of a PEM electrolyzer to dissociate potassium sulfate. He obtained his master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1999, wherein he worked as a part of a team involved in the development, testing and installation of software sensors for online optimization of an atmospheric crude distillation unit (CDU) at the Indian Oil Corporation, Mathura Refinery, India. He then joined the University of Florida, Gainesville USA for his doctoral studies. He obtained his PhD in 2006 for a dissertation titled “Polymer-Induced Forces at Interfaces” in which he studied equilibrium forces of compression of physisorbed polymer layers using lattice mean-field theories and simulations, and biophysical modeling of the motility of Listeria monocytogenes propelled by actin filaments. He worked brief as a visiting research scholar (post-doctoral fellow) at the Clean Energy Research Center at the University of South Florida on modeling and simulation of alternate energy systems, including combined power/cooling thermodynamic cycles and thermochemical methods of hydrogen production.
His current research interests include modeling and simulation of confined complex fluids, modern control strategies for crude oil processing units, petroleum reservoir engineering, alternate energy systems for fuel and cooking, and developing innovative strategies to improve engineering education.
Dr. Balaji Srinivasan, Ph.D (Stanford University, USA)
Dr. Balaji Srinivasan has joined Amrita in the Department of Aerospace Engineering as the Assistant Professor. He did his B.Tech in Aerospace Engg. at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He finished his M.S in Aerospace from Purdue University in 2000 and Ph.D. in Aerospace from Stanford University in 2005. He was a post-doctoral researcher in University of Michigan, Ann Arbor till 2007. His research interests are in numerical methods, computational fluid dynamics, turbulence and interfacial flow computations.
26 years of academic experience, including 21 years at various US Universities such as Oklahoma City University, San Francisco State University, Pace University,University of San Francisco and New York University. Also taught in academic programs in Canada, China, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Publications in US academic journals such as the “Journal of International Business Studies”, and the “Journal of International Money & Finance”. Worked briefly with the United Nations (Center for Transnational Corporations) in New York and with Rollei Corporation in Singapore.
Taught at Stanford Business School for 5 years, guest lectured at Harvard Business School, and 12 years teaching experience is taking a course on “BPM-Managing Change”. He did his B.S. and M.S. in Engineering in four years from University of Pittsburgh, USA. He has held senior management positions in leading Corporates in the USA like Intel, 3Com, Capital Group and Soros Fund Management, owned by the brilliant investor, Mr. George Soros, where he was Managing Director. He has published 2 books: “Business Telecommunications” and“Business Telematics,” by the leading business book publisher in the USA. He was a finalist for the Distinguished Teaching Award at Stanford and has interacted with business leaders like Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Gordon Moore. He has also been on the boards of directors of many technology firms, and now focuses his efforts on helping large charitable organizations.
Dr.Deepak Gupta Associate Professor, Marketing , School of Business
More than 10 years of combined teaching and research experience at UC Berkeley as a graduate student, where he earned masters degrees in Economics, Marketing Science, and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. Doctoral work was on the post-Ph.D choices and career outcomes of foreign-born US PhDs in Science & Engineering. Extensive experience in academic research. Worked with several research projects in UC Berkeley both in the fields higher education and transportation research involving the econometric modeling of individual choice behavior. Publications include a forthcoming chapter in “The Ph. D Passport to Multiple Destinations,” edited by Maresi Nerad and Joseph Cerny and papers in international journals including “Transportation Research Record,” “International Higher Education.” Worked with Ponds India Ltd. for around three years as Area Sales Manager, planning, implementing, and controlling the sales of Pond’s products in specified geographical locations in the Southern and Eastern parts of India. Current Teaching interests include International Business, Research Methods, and Marketing.
Dr.Biresh Sahoo Associate Professor, Economics, School of Business
Over 12 years of teaching and research experience. Recipient of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowship for 12 consecutive months to pursue advanced research at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Tokyo under the auspices of the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Foreign Researchers. Has qualified the National Educational Test (NET) for Lectureship in Economics conducted by University Grant Commission, New Delhi. Publications in scholarly international journals, such as the Annals of Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Systems Science, International Journal of Applied Economics and Econometrics, Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, and Opsearch.
Ten years of experience in international development working in nature conservation and development projects in Madagascar, Vietnam, Lao PDR, and India with the Cornell Institute for Food, Agricultural and Development (CIIFAD), WWF-Indochina, ADB, UNDP, and GFA Terra Systems (Germany). Consulting assignments included project design and implementation, design of monitoring and evaluation systems, impact assessment, training needs analysis and training delivery, and strategic planning. Dr. Prem Nair is the Medical Director of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Chairman of the Digestive Diseases Institute at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. He completed his MBBS from National Medical College, Residency in the Department of Internal Medicine from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York and took his Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases Fellowship from Los Angeles County Hospital, California. He was a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California and Director of Gastroenterology at the USC-Good Samaritan hospital for Ten years prior to his return to India.
Dr. Ajith Babu Dr Ajit N. Babu, Director CDH & Professor of Medicine
Dr Ajit N. Babu who directs the Center for Digital Health at the Cochin campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is Professor and Chairman for the Institute of Medical Informatics and Multimedia Education at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Cochin. After completing his MBBS at Trivandrum Medical College, Kerala, Dr Babu completed his post-graduate residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital of Cornell University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. During his training, he was the winner of the Syntex/MEDICINE award for excellence in clinical practice. He got a degree of Master in Public Health (MPH) from Saint Louis University (SLU) in 1998 and became a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) in 1999. He also has had advanced training in medical informatics through the National Library of Medicine and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Wood's Hole, Massachusetts in 2000. Dr. Babu returned to India in 2004 to set-up the Institute of Medical Informatics and Multimedia Education at AIMS as well as the Center for Digital Health. He continues to retain faculty appointment at Saint Louis University.

Dr. Kuriakose has had his training in dentistry from University of Mysore, India, Medicine from University of Bristol, UK, General surgery from University of Bristol, Maxillofacial surgery from University of Newcastle, head and neck surgical oncology from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, New York. He has completed American Head and Neck Society accredited training in advanced head and neck oncology, fellowships of Royal college of surgeons of Ireland, England and Edinburgh, completed exit examination of U.K. intercollegiate board of examination in Maxillofacial surgery and is board certified by American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. From 1999 to 2003 he served as Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at New York University and was the Director of Head and Neck Oncology Translational Research Program of New York University. He continues his affiliation with New York University as a part-time Associate Professor. He is editorial review board member of six international journals.Since November 2006, he joined Amrita Institute of Medical Science as professor and chairman of head and neck institute of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin. Dr. T.S. Ganesan,
Dr. T.S. Ganesan has joined AIMS as ‘Chairman – Cancer Centre’ and ‘Chairman – Institute of Molecular Medicine’.
Dr. Ganesan completed his MBBS & MD(Gen.Medicine) from JIPMER and then moved to UK. He is also a Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS). He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and has specialized training in Medical Oncology accredited by Joint Committee on Higher Medical Training (JCHMT-UK). He has worked as Senior Registrar at St.Bartholomew’s Hospital, Royal London Hospital, London and was a Visiting Fellow in Medical Oncology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston & Fox Chase Cancer Institute, Philadelphia. He secured his doctorate (Ph.D) for a study of bcr and abl genes and their products in Philadelphia chromosome positive leukaemia’s from University of London.
His teaching experience include lectures on cancer for MRCP, M.Phil, Ph.D and undergraduate & post graduate students. He has been an Examiner at University of Oxford (DM)(D.Phil), Melbourne (Ph.D), Manchester(MD), Glasgow (MD), etc.
He has more than 100 publications and he has handled extramural scientific research grants exceeding 1.2 million pounds.
He was appointed as a Clinical Scientist by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) and joined the newly established ICRF Medical Oncology Unit at Oxford in May 1990 as a Consultant in Medical Oncology. The position at the Consultant level had evolved leading to an integrated programme of research in gynaecological cancer and testicular cancer. The Clinical research programme, which has focused primarily on early phase I/II trials taking cognizance of preclinical research. The trials include improving the initial management of ovarian cancer, role of thalidomide, gene therapy and monoclonal antibody therapy. He has established Laboratory in the Institute of Molecular medicine at Oxford to understand the molecular genetic changes important in the pathogenesis of epithelial ovarian cancer. His main scientific research interests are in signal transduction and cancer genetics. Prior to joining AIMS, he was Reader/Honorary Consultant at University of Oxford, CRUK (Cancer Research UK) Dept. of Medical Oncology, Churchill Hospital and Head, Ovarian Cancer Group, CRUK Molecular Oncology Laboratories, Institute of Molecular Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford.
He is currently setting up a research institute at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences to do Scientific research (www.aimshospital.org/research) in addition to being head of the cancer institute
Dr.Bipin Nair
Professor and Dean, School of Biotechnology
Dr. Nair, joined us from MDS Pharma Services, USA, where he worked for the past 12 years as the Research Manager in the Lead Discovery Group. Dr. Nair was responsible for the coordination of New Assay Development and High Throughput Screening. He has been responsible for generating several million dollars in revenues over the past decade at MDSPS and has over 30 international publications to his credit.
Dr. Banerji joined us from RRL, Trivandrum and is a DAE Raja Ramanna Fellowship awardee as well as the former Head of Bioorganic Division, at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay
I went to the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. for my undergraduate degree in physics and obtained my PhD degree from the University of Maryland. My thesis concerned calculations on the lifetime of the plasma oscillation of the electron gas in metals. While still a student, I worked at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., where I helped to keep the standard of illumination, the light intensity emitted from a black body kept at the temperature of molten platinum. I held an internship at the General Motors Research Laboratories where I worked on the problem of chemabsorption on metallic surfaces. In 1972, I held the position of assistant editor of Physics Today, a publication of the American Physical Society. I taught Physics at Merritt College in Oakland California, the University of Maryland at Catonsville, and I was a visiting professor of physics at the Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand. I left physics for a number of years to pursue my interest in art. I then entered the computer field where I worked as a programmer for Chase Manhattan Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank. I returned to academics to teach technical mainframe computer topics at the New York University. I spent 20 years as Director of Academic Computing, Chairman of the Academic Computing Department, and lecturer in physics and computer subjects at the Sullivan County College. I met Amma in 1992.
Prof. C.S. Shastry, Prof. Emeritus, has done his Ph.D from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Calcutta University. He has also been the Post-Doctoral Fellow at Louisiana State Univeristy. He has also been the faculty member at BITS and NEHU, Shillong. He has worked as Dean of School Physical Sciences in NEHU.
He had done research in Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Physics Education. He has supervised successfully 10 Ph.D. candidates and has more 80 research papers in reputed international and national journal to his credit.
Dr. Nirmala received her Ph.D. in Physics from a Northwestern University in the United States and has returned back to join Amrita as a full time faculty member at Amritapuri campus. Her area of specialization in Ph.D. was particle physics She's also a member of the WINSOC (Wireless Sensor Network with Self-Organization Capabilities for critical and emergency applications, www.winsoc.org ) project at the Amrita University campus in Amritapuri. The WINSOC project is a unique Indo-European Consortium funded by the European Commission. It includes India’s Antrix (the commercial arm of ISRO) as well as other well established European universities and research institutions

Dr. N. Narayana Rao Distinguished AMRITA Professor of Engineering, AMRITA Vishwa Vidyapeetham
Nannapaneni Narayana Rao was born in Kakumanu, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Prior to going to the United States in 1958, he attended the Presidency College, Madras, receiving the B.Sc. Degree in Physics from the University of Madras in 1952, and then the Madras Institute of Technology, receiving the Diploma in Electronics from that Institute in 1955. In the United States, he attended the University of Washington, receiving the M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1960 and 1965, respectively. In 1965, he joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering, now Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Urbana, Illinois, accepting an offer from the then Department Head, the late Edward C. Jordan. He served as the Associate Head of the Department for 19 years from 1987 to 2006, during his tenure of 42 years, and retired in 2007. He is currently the Edward C. Jordan Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIUC, and Distinguished AMRITA Professor of Engineering, AMRITA Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Ettimadai, Coimbatore, INDIA.

He is currently Senior Software Manager at McAfee, Santa Clara, California.
