About the Centre

The Centre is located at the Coimbatore Campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

Although the Center was officially established only in 2004, the tree-planting and nature conservation activities that are its focus, began on the campus in the mid-1990s. These activities revolved around the greening and landscaping of the then-fledgling campus. Over the years, nearly one lakh trees were planted. Today, students from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University come to Amrita's Coimbatore Campus to study the varied species of plants and trees that are planted here.

The activities of the Center today span a wide range -- managing tree plantations that have hundreds of species of trees, an organic coconut farm, sewage effluent recycling plants that use bio-remediation techniques, recycling of plant-animal wastes through vermiculture and composting, an environment lab and a farm at Walayar that is in a different agroclimatic condition. Research is conducted in the areas of biodiversity conservation, cultivation of medicinal plants, eco-restoration and waste management.
