The Amrita School of Communication conducted an outreach program for area schools on October 6, 2012.

“The main idea for conducting this program was to provide high school students some refreshing options for their higher studies and motivate them to explore beyond the usual engineering and medical disciplines,” shared Mr. P. Jayaram, Chairperson, Amrita School of Communication.

Forty eight school students from schools in and around Coimbatore such as Kendriya Vidyalaya, Vidya Vikasini School, State Bank of India Officers Association (SBOA) Matriculation Higher Secondary School, G.D.Matriculation School, National Institute of Open Schooling and Amrita Vidyalayam participated.

The program included sessions wherein the faculty of the Amrita School of Communication provided training in writing and photography. While the former provided insights on focused and concise writing from the heart and highlighted the importance of good vocabulary and correct grammar, the latter covered latest trends in the field of photography and the use of pictures in newspaper reports.

There was also a session on photography which covered the latest trends in the field, the body language elements while taking photographs, the use of pictures in newspaper reports and candid photography.

Next students had the opportunity to participate in essay writing and photography competitions, the latter emphasized themes on nature.

Showcasing the institution’s approach to sustainable development and seeking to acquaint students with its eco friendly initiatives, the students were led on a tour of the campus, and a visit to the Effluent Treatment Plants.

“Bringing students close to nature, adds a whole new dimension to education. We believe that this helps mould them into responsible citizens, who have a positive attitude towards life,” stated Dr. Kalyani Suresh, Assistant Professor at the Amrita School of Communication, who coordinated the outreach program.

The program came to an end with prizes being distributed to the winners of the essay writing and photography competitions.

Aditi Parekh from National Institute of Open Schooling, Sonika M Kurup from Kendriya Vidyalaya and Dharshini from G.D. Matriculation School won the first, second and third prizes respectively for their essays.
