Education and Career:

My schooling was in Lisieux School Coimbatore where I invested all my school boy years from LKG to class XII.

I did my MSc Software Enginnering at Amrita Institute of Technology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham(5 cherished years at Amrita). Its been a year since I am working in Wipro Technologies, Bangalore. It6 is here i tasted academic success of a larger dimension when I became the University Rank Holder(rank 4th in Bharathiar University) (http://www.amrita.edu/news/news.htm) and Co-author along
(with Dr.KP Soman and ShivSubramani.K of an International paper.

The way Amrita moulded me eventually led me to winning the "Prodigy award (Best Campus recruit in Embedded and Product Engineering Services division of Wipro Technologies.."

Reflections:

Life at Amrita:
One memoir I cherish is how I used to watch this new college when I used to travel by train from Coimbatore to my native palakkad. My mom used to tell me hopefully one day you will be there if you study hard. And there I was in Amrita Institute of Technology right after my class XII…a dream come true.

Our Class:
Our class - the pioneer batch of MSc Software Engg (a 5 year course) was software all the way. Our class was hand picked and we had the best of brains. It was a bandwagon of illustrious individuals. I am sure all of them are on their way to this page.

It was a 5 year dream run.

Our faculty:
Among the many good faculty we had during the course I must say we were indebted to Mrs.Rajathilagam. She played a pivotal role to convert our class of novices to budding professionals.

Dr. Soman who was our project guide in the final semester is an epitome of dedication. He has a phenomenal knowledge on almost all fields. We could learn a lot from him.

Some of the people whom I draw inspiration from are Dr.S.Krishnamoorthy, Dr.T.R.Padmanabhan, Dr.Deepak Gupta, Ms. Shobana Madhavan. The list is endless for we have an excellent brigade.

We have some of the best minds of the academic world who are already there and with more of them coming to join Amrita I guess the golden age has just started.

Vidya:
A wonder called Vidya was born right in front of our eyes. I say with pride that it is one of the best digital libraries in the world. A collection of timeless knowledge from core engineering to Literature. Mr. Ajai Narendran is the architect of this incredible work of art. More»

Hostel Life:
A special mention about our warden Brahmachari palanivelu fondly called PV sir. He was like a father to all of us and had this phenomenol ability of identifying people and parents by their voice. His demise shattered all of us. We are all indebted to him for the pleasant family atmosphere in hostel.

Ambience:
The environment provides an ideal setting for learning and recreation. Apart from that I cherish the Ettimadai railway station and the hostel balcony where the two places where most of my poems where born. Vallikavu silhouetted between backwaters and the ocean. where we used to go frequently is heaven on Earth

Spirit of Service:
The unique blend of hard core technology based on values is what makes us stand out. All of us are indebted to the values inculcated in us right through the course.
I was fortunate to take part in Amritavarsham 50, visit vallikavu and participate in the community service. We students are given the noble opportunity to serve food to the poor and needy. This made us understand that life has indeed come on a platter for most of us.

A special mention is our COO Br.Abhayamrita Chaitanya who leads by example when it comes to work and also selfless service.

Above all the atmosphere has the divine grace of AMMA. AMMA has showered her grace on all her children. AMMA is an epitome of selfless service to the entire world .This inspires all of us to show that dedication and commitment with an attitude of selflessness wherever we are.

Exploring Frontiers in Macromolecular Engineering

Aditya Narayanan of 2005 BE ( Polymer Engineering) batch is currently pursuing  his Ph.D programme at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He is specialising in the cutting edge area of Macro molecular Engineering.

Aditya on his student years at Amrita.

I did my schooling in Sishya, an ICSE board school in Chennai. The foundation was laid right there, and helped me gain admission to Amrita Institute of Technology. Right from day one, I was fascinated by the College, now one of the fastest growing research universities India. Life at Amrita , was truly memorable. An excellent blend of value-based education, coupled with the great ambience around the campus, along with a fun-filled hostel life brings back many moments worth cherishing. The bhajans, the community service we all were engaged in whenever Amma came to Coimbatore, and frequent trips to Vallikavu, were amazing experiences for me. Spending valuable time at the Computer labs and College canteen in the evenings were always fun-filled.

My undergrad was in Polymer Engineering. Prof Subba rao , the Chairperson of the Department was a great motivator and often used to urge us into pursuing higher studies .From the 2nd year on, I was keen on doing a Master's at a prestigious University in the US, and started preparing towards that, as the years went by. The syllabus for every semester was chalked out well wherein, I was exposed to the different fields of Polymer Science and Engineering. The applications of Polymers is tremendous, from domestic use to high-tech applications.Over the third and fourth years at Amrita, through the help of the faculty and specific labs, we gained expertise into the details of Polymer Processing,Characterization ,Design and Testing . This laid the perfect foundation to study further and specialize in one of these fields. By the middle of the third year, it was all about narrowing down on my interests and selecting Universities, which offered specialized MS/PhD programs in Polymer Science and Engineering. This was when I got some valuable information from Ajai Narandran Sir, Content Manager and Web Master for Amrita, Coimbatore.

Ajai sir was telling me about the places where I was applying, the weather conditions there, amongst other things. I have had a couple of serious discussions with him , regarding the various Universities I had in mind.He knew where all I was planning to apply, and when I once mentioned about the Graduate program at the University of Michigan(U of M, UMich) -Ann Arbor, I still remember how excited Ajai Sir got, he told me to try my best to get an admit, and that I should have no hesitation in going there, because it was a Top 10 Engineering University in the US, and a great place to study. I had no hopes of gaining admission to U of M , but Ajai sir's confidence kept my hopes alive, and in the end , I did secure an admit to this University. I am currently working towards my Ph.D in Macromolecular Science and Engineering at U of M, and plan to specialize in the field of Fluorescent Polymeric Chemical and Bio-chemical sensors .

The University is simply amazing, there are quite a few Indians here in Ann Arbor. A coinciding factor about Ann Arbor, is that one of Amma's main ashrams in the US, is located at Ann Arbor.I got to know this, from Prof. Subba Rao, when I met him for the last time, before it was time to leave Amrita. A wonderful place, it truly brings back memories of the bhajans back in the Ettimadai campus.

Research& Career
I am focusing my research on Fluorescent Polymeric Materials for use as Chemical/Bio-chemical Sensors. It has has gained much interest in the recent years, and is a key study in our Research Group. We use femtosecond pulse Lasers to work on different novel molecular structures. This spectroscopic technique is one of the best in the world, and very few research groups in the US use this method for characterization.

My career plans are shaping up slowly but steadily. I'd like to gain expertise in the field mentioned above, and graduate with a Doctoral degree in Macromolecular Science and Engineering. I intend to focus my career in Macromolecular Science and work in a Research Lab / Industry, emphasizing on my field of specialization.

I really hope to see more of our Juniors coming here, and would be happy to help , regarding higher studies in the US. Thank you.

Aditya Narayanan
Ph.D Student , Macromolecular Science & Engineering
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Amrita's Presence at Stanford University

Vijay Francis from 2005 BE ( Polymer Engineering) batch secured admission for Masters Programme at the prestigious Stanford University, USA. He was doing his MS in Materials Science at Univ. of Dayton, Ohio prior to getting this admission offer from Stanford. Vijay joins the expanding group of Amrita students securing admission for higher studies at some of the most prestigious universities around the world. Earlier Mr. Udhay Kumar of ECE 2004 batch secured admission at Carnegie Mellon University, USA and Cambridge University, UK , Mr.Shyam Divakar of ECE 2002 batch is currently doing his Ph.D on Computational Neuroscience at University of Milan, Italy, Aditya Narayanan - Ph.D Macromolecular Science and Engg -University of Michigan , Ann Arbor , Subramaniam M.V.S.S - Ph.D Chemical Engineering - Ohio State University,Columbus and Sandeep Unnikrishnan doing his Ph.D in the area of Bio-MEMS at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

Vijay on his Life @ Amrita

I did my schooling in Hari Sri Vidya Nidhi which is in my native place, Thrissur. The life skills learnt in there helped me in the transition to college life at Amrita. In my first year I was introduced to subjects which were to form the base of my major, Polymers. The good tracking system in place at Amrita made effective by advisors and counselors saw to it that I, along with all others gave in our best. The Chairperson of Polymer Department, Prof. Subba Rao was someone that all of us looked up to during this period. Second year was the most demanding part of my B.Tech education where I really got to know polymers. I consider it a blessing to have had very good instructors for those subjects. The labs which were offered and the regular symposia (Polyvista) that used to happen in Polymer Dept. helped me in selecting what I wanted to do. Having a direction helped me in doing courses in my third and final years with enthusiasm.

Final year was my most enjoyable time at Amrita. I owe it mainly to my project partners Prabeesh T.K and Siva Subrahmanyam who are currently pursuing M.Tech in CEN and PhD in Ohio State Univ. respectively. The evening walks on campus with hostelites and the bhajans on Thursday nights will always have a special place in me. I feel happy and a bit lucky that I was able to get what I wanted, from Amrita. I could have done better though! I have never had the fortune to walk up and receive prizes for any of the University exams nor could anyone spot me in the library, while I was like a fixture in the college canteen. All those hours were wasted on me and I wish that my juniors will strive to differ. Good luck!

Vijay Francis

From Electronics Engineering to Brain Modelling at University of Milan, ITALY

Mr.Shyam Diwakar
of B.Tech ECE 2002 batch is currently pursuing a Doctoral programme at University of Milan, Italy. He works on 'Mathematics and Statistics for Computational Science' with interdisclipinary focus towards creating computational models of the brain.

About me & my career:
I currently work on computational modeling of cerebellar granule cells as a part of my PhD work. I am officially supported by a non-EU student grant for a period of 3 years to do research by the Universita' degli Studi di Milano(University of Milan), Milan, Italy and am registered as a Dottorando(PhD registrant) at the Dipartimento di Matematica( Dept. of Mathematics) for study on "Mathematics and Statistics for Computational Science".

However, all my work is being done at the Department of Physiological and Pharmacological Sciences, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy. I have visited some meetings at Hebrew University of Israel, Max Plank Institute-Germany, Abdus Salam ICTP- Trieste etc as part of my study.

Life at Amrita:

I joined Amrita Institute of Science and Technology(now ASE) as a student in 1998. I saw my first lessons of humility when I saw the Correspondent ( now the COO) stepping down as an ordinary helper to arrange chairs during an event related to inauguration of a supercomputer. My interest in mathematics has been always overshadowed by laziness and in most cases i usually did not perform math very well, especially in exams. I wanted to pursue Superstring theory in my first year of bachelors for which I was very much supported by the physics department in spite of their limited facilities then.

But real interests for math was motivated in courses handled by Prof. Padmanabhan and later by Prof.Soman. Amrita University(Schools of Engineering and Business) had been conducting very interesting summer courses for people from industry and academia on lead topics like parallel computation, machine intelligence etc. It was during some of these courses that I learnt that engineering is math. The studies on probabilistic methods for pattern recognition provided me an idea for a paper which i presented in Greece immediately after graduation. Math turned interesting. Better motivation came from Prof.Soman who then insisted i could continue on a research career and also provided me a position as an research assistant under him at Amrita
Institute of Management (now ASB).

Later on he started the Centre for Computational Engineering to which I was transferred. It was at CEN that my interests to pursue brain modeling were rekindled. Prof. Ramachandran supported me and inspired me through his wonderful course on partial differential equations and later suggested i work on a system of my choice preferably retaining my interests on Hodgkin-Huxley type equations. He had been more than just my teacher. He supported me as a researcher and we used to have interesting discussions on dynamics even on tea tables at the canteen.

Life is wonderful especially to work on academics mostly because its hastle-free. Amrita campus gave me just more than that. I used to walk into the outer woods surrounding the campus when i had too much stress and one hour of time sitting on a bare rock overlooking into the greenery and the pink Institution buildings farther below was more than just sufficient. All thanks to that campus that has brought me here. I am very happy to say its only because of Amrita that I am.

Imagine a refrigerator-cum-heater that costs Rs 1,000, is portable and cools two litres of water in half an hour. Sounds impossible?

Unni Suresh, a third-year Production Engineering student of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has come up with this dream machine. This mini refrigerator works on the thermocouple principle. In this 12V, 3 amps machine, Germanium and Silicon are doped and current is passed to create hot and cold junctions. The cold junction inside the refrigerator reduces the temperature, depending on the room temperature. At a room temperature of 35 degree Celsius, a considerable –5 degree Celsius could be achieved inside. More»

Unni's Reflections on Amrita

After a few years of industrial exposure, I plan to pursue my graduate studies in signal processing.

My life at Amrita:
The unique blend of moral and technical education at Amrita has refined me. I am grateful to my faculty without whom my acievements would not have been quite possible. I especially thank my guide, Mr.Santhosh Kumar and Vice Chancellor Dr.Venkat Rangan for their continuous encouragement and support.

Apart from the world-class infrastructure and highly qualified researchers, the calmness and tranquility of the campus provides an environment that is most conducive to learning. The education system is quite different here which emphasizes one's creativity and personal growth instead of just rote learning. Value-based education at Amrita has not only transformed me as a competitive engineer to face the corporate world, but also as a disciplined citizen of the society.

Being an alumni I am overwhelmed by the recent progress like e-learning, telemedicine etc at the university. I am delighted to know that Amrita has become a rendezvous of scientists, academicians and corporate professionals. With the blessings of Amma, Amrita will soon emerge as one of the premier institutes in the world.

About my college

Four years I spent in Amrita are short and sweet days in my life. Amrita Institute provided me the oppurtunities to expose my talents in all possible ways. The most inspiring thing about the institute is the value based technical education that helps the students to mould their character and face the challenges in day to day life in a better possible way. All these days what I have failed to see outside my college campus is the dedicated team of faculty and state of the art infrastructure.

I would like to thank and appreciate the help provided by the Management and faculty of Amrita Institute for their constructive comments and encouragement which helped my project team to do our work on Multilingual Speech Recognition. We presented our paper in Student Research Workshop at Boston in May 2004. It is really great to see that the college has a very good recognition in the industry. With Amma's blessings the institute will soon attain its goal in creating leaders for this millennium.

From Ettimadai to the United Nations Organisation, New York

Vijaychandran of BE (2004) batch, who is currently enrolled for MS programme at the University of South Florida is selected by the United Nations Organisations to execute a key project. He happens to be the youngest intern at the Information Technology Dept. in United Nations Office of Legal affairs.

Vijay's reflections on Amrita
Students are built by the institutions and I can tell that in this context, Amrita can really be proud of moulding such fine individuals and technocrats. I am sure that in the coming years Amrita Alumni will be all over the globe and sure enough, they will be excelling in their chosen fields. The four years were really like being in fire for me, frankly I struggled a lot through the rules and restrcitions there and but now I realise that it was the best which I can get that time. They were meant for my better tomorrows and once we get out of the campus we realise that all the rules and restrictions were there to enable us confront the realities in the world.

I am happy to see education there getting enriched with more research activities. Facilities in the college is really comparable to any other colleges. I am also touched by the untiring commitment of some of my faculty members who helped me out even at during odd hours amidst their hectic schedule.

Vijay on his Education and current work:
I am a full time international graduate student in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Dept. at the University of South Florida. I aim to complete my MS degree in Industrial Engineering by Spring 2006. In the coming Spring 2005 semester, I have been accepted into the very prestigious internship program at the United Nations Organization (UNO) Secretariat Headquarters in New York City. I believe that I am the only student from the college who has been presented with such a great opportunity. The period of the internship will extend from 10 January 2005 to 10 April 2005 at the Information technology Department in United Nations Office of Legal affairs.

The focus of my project at the UN is to develop and implement a new web based search algorithm to query the existing database, sort publications and provide search results to the user. In addition the work will also involve implementation of security protocols to authenticate and restrict user access.

This internship would allow me an unprecedented opportunity to observe the working and management of an international organization. The interdisciplinary nature of my internship program and the project in UN will be excellent training for my MS thesis research. The challenges, which I will face, and the actions that I will take to overcome them, will be a great experience and further boost to my research work here. I would be able to apply the resulting insight and knowledge specifically to the student community by sharing my research experience with my program colleagues.
